Same-day cataract surgery

We understand multiple appointments for patients traveling to our clinic from far distances for cataract surgery are inconvenient for both patients and their families. Because of this, we offer same-day cataract surgery to select patients traveling from more than two hours away.

Patients are carefully screened to determine their eligibility  – only those undergoing laser cataract surgery or standard cataract surgery can utilize the service – and must be referred to our clinic by an optometrist. Cataract surgery patients who have other eye conditions that may complicate the surgery might not be candidates for the same-day option. Also, patients requiring a specialty lens may need to be seen for more than one appointment. Tower Clock Surgery Center keeps over 1000 different lenses in stock so the vast majority of patients can be accommodated.

Same-day cataract surgery includes an early morning appointment for testing. Here, our team will take down your medical information, perform basic diagnostic tests, learn your health history, test your current eyeglass prescription, dilate your pupils and you will meet with one of our refractive counselors. This battery of tests can take up to one and a half hours.

Once complete, you’ll meet with one of our surgeons to review the diagnostic tests. Here is where you and your surgeon make the final decision about whether or not the same-day surgery is right for you. Once your surgical course of action is determined, you’ll have the opportunity to ask your surgeon any additional questions you have. Patients will then start the pre-op process by meeting with our nursing staff to prepare for surgery. This generally takes about an hour.

Cataract surgery is a relatively fast procedure, often taking less than 20 minutes. When your new lens is placed in your eye and your surgery is complete, you’ll be rolled into our post-op area where you can rest, relax and recover. When you feel better and ready to move about, we’ll discharge you to a friend or loved one for your travel home.

Our staff will help schedule your post-op appointment with your referring optometrist for the next day, or, if you don’t have a preferred optometrist, we can schedule an appointment with one of our optometrists later the day of surgery.

It is important to note that the entire process of same-day cataract surgery from initial appointment to discharge will take the balance of the day, and patients and their drivers should be prepared for this.

Currently, same-day cataract surgery is only available in our Green Bay location.
